Why start planning for college in 10th grade?
The 10th grade year is generally one of the most difficult years academically because students will be taking more advanced levels of math, science, and foreign language. In addition, students have identified and become very involved in their extra curricular interests and their peer group.
The challenge during the 10th grade year is to help students continue to maintain a serious approach to their academic course of study. GPA is the number one criteria for college admission, and the challenges of 10th grade can be difficult to manage. The key is to help them remain focused while understanding the importance of maintaining high grades and involvement in activities that build an impressive resume. Students should begin to make decisions about a career they want to pursue.
What does Springwell do for 10th graders?
Springwell helps keep 10th graders focused with Study Skills and teaches them how to stay on top of their workload. We also begin to narrow the field of potential target colleges in order to refine their high school coursework selection and ensure that they are building the proper 'resume' for acceptance to school.
We begin the standardized testing preparation by conducting a diagnostic to understand their skill level and determine the necessary areas of improvement. We help them prepare for the PSAT, their first experience with college entrance exams.
We continue to emphasize community involvement for students. This allows 10th graders to learn about the types of jobs that interest them and to begin to understand what will be required of them for success. Finally, Springwell's financial aid experts are an invaluable resource to the parents of college-bound students by assisting with the planning process and clarifying the options available for financial aid.
